When to Go
Peru is a diverse country in terms of climate and geography, so the best time to visit may vary depending on the regions you want to explore. Here is some general information about the different seasons and climates in Peru:
- Coast: The Peruvian coast has a subtropical desert climate. The summer months, from December to March, are hot and sunny, with temperatures ranging between 25°C and 35°C (77°F-95°F). During the winter, from June to September, temperatures are milder, around 15°C-20°C (59°F-68°F). This region has a fog called «garúa» during the winter months.
- Highlands: The Peruvian highlands, which include the Andes, have a cooler climate due to the altitude. The dry season in the highlands runs from April to October, with June to August being the driest months. During these months, daytime temperatures can be warm, but nights are cold, especially in higher altitude areas. During the rainy season, from November to March, you can expect more frequent rainfall.
- Jungle: The Amazon rainforest in eastern Peru has a tropical climate. The rainy season in the jungle runs from December to March, while the dry season extends from April to November. Note that even during the dry season, there may be occasional rainfall in the jungle due to its humid climate.
In general, the best time to visit Peru is during the dry season, which varies by region. However, each region has its appeal at different times of the year. For example, if you plan to trek in the Andes, the dry season from May to September is usually the most suitable. If you want to visit the jungle, the dry season from April to November may offer better conditions for exploring the flora and fauna.
Be aware that popular tourist destinations, such as Machu Picchu, can be busier during the high season, which generally coincides with the summer months and school holidays. If you prefer to avoid crowds, you may want to consider travelling during the low season months.
Whenever you decide to visit Peru, be sure to check the specific weather conditions in the regions you plan to visit and prepare adequately in terms of clothing and other necessary items.
