Ayacucho
6,500-hectare reserve at altitudes ranging from 3,850 to 4,150 masl. Vast plains with rolling hills, surrounded by valleys and ravines. A haven for some 6,000 vicuña and home to other indigenous high-Andean fauna (Andean foxes, Pampas cats, Andean deer or «viscachas», Andean gulls, hummingbirds and kestrels). Local flora includes natural grasses known as «ichu,» scrublands, and small forested regions featuring species of «qishuar» and «queñuales». On 24 June the «chaccu» is celebrated, an ancestral ritual centred around vicuña-shearing.
