Independence Day – Peru traditions
Cusco
Begins : 28-July
Ends : 29-July
All over the country, Peruvians hold parties and patriotic celebrations to remember the Declaration of Peru’s Independence (July 28, 1821). In Lima and several cities of Peru, and even in remote villages, houses fly Peruvian flags from the start of the month. On the night of the 27th, serenades of folk and Creole music are usually performed in public parks and squares. On 28th, the sunrise is greeted with a 21-cannon salute before the flag-raising ceremony. Afterwards, the Te Deum ceremony, attended by the Peruvian President, is held in Lima Cathedral. The event ends on July 29 with the famous Military Parade. In several areas of the country, Peruvians also hold agricultural fairs (Cajamarca, Piura, Monsefú) together with three festivals celebrating the heart of Creole culture: cockfighting, bullfighting and Peruvian paso horse exhibitions.
