Health & Safety

It is important to keep in mind some recommendations to maintain your health and safety during your stay in the country. Here are some tips:

  • Vaccinations: Before travelling to Peru, be sure to consult a doctor or vaccination centre for recommended vaccinations. Common vaccinations for travellers include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus-diphtheria and yellow fever vaccine if visiting risk areas. Also, consider getting the influenza vaccine, especially if you are travelling during flu season.
  • Medical insurance: It is essential to have travel medical insurance to cover any health eventualities during your stay in Peru. Be sure to check the coverages included, such as medical care, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation in case of serious illness or injury.
  • Drinking water: To avoid water-borne diseases such as traveller’s diarrhoea, it is advisable to drink bottled water and avoid consuming ice in drinks that have not been prepared with safe water. Also avoid consuming raw or undercooked food and wash your hands frequently, especially before eating.
  • Medications and medical care: If you take prescription medication, be sure to bring enough for your entire stay in Peru. Also, carry a copy of your prescriptions with you in case you need to refill your medication. If you require medical attention during your trip, look for reliable and recommended medical services. Private hospitals and clinics usually offer a higher standard of care.
  • Personal safety: As with any destination, it is important to take precautions to maintain your personal safety. Avoid conspicuously displaying valuables, especially in crowded or high-risk areas. Use hotel safes to store your valuables and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas at night. Find out about safe areas and avoid places that may be considered dangerous.
  • Adapting to altitude: If you plan to visit high altitude places, such as Cusco or Lake Titicaca, it is important to take measures to avoid altitude sickness. Gradually acclimatise to the altitude, get enough rest, stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and consult a doctor if you have any concerns.

Remember that these recommendations are general and it is important to adapt them to your personal needs and circumstances. Be informed and updated about health and safety conditions in Peru before and during your trip – enjoy your stay in the country!
