Easter Week in Áncash – Peru Attractions
Ancash
Begins: 01-April
Ends: 30-April
Easter Week All over the area, in the cities of Huaraz, Caraz, Chavín and Huari. In each city, Palm Sunday and Good Friday processions take place. The Huaraqui «wake up» or «dawn» procession begins at 2 a.m. and moves through the streets with melancholy hymns sung by rural people from various communities who have come to Huaraz to accompany the journey of the traditional image of Jesus of Nazareth. In Huaraz, groups of families are especially devoted to the Romans, or «Chunchus», and worship them like saints, a status they say they deserve as they were forgiven by Jesus when he was on the cross. Finally, during the Good Friday procession, a model of Jesus of Nazareth with articulated joints brings the scene to life through internal mechanisms that allow it to act out the three falls.
