Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Chan Chan is known internationally as being the largest mud city in the pre-Hispanic world. In the Yunga language, Jang Jang means «sun, sun». It was the religious capital of the Chimú kingdom (700 – 1,400 AD), and is located in the Moche River valley, in the La Libertad department, in northern Peru. It stretches over approximately 20 km2 (8 sq. miles), and it is estimated that close to 100,000 people lived here. The city was the urban center of a vast regional state that dominated half the Peruvian coast, from Tumbes and the border of Ecuador to the south of Lima.
